About Dr Anthony A Theodorides

Dr Anthony Theodorides is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon with a particular interest in sports knee injuries (soft tissue) having trained in internationally acclaimed Hospitals in UK where he lived since childhood. 

Academic Background


In 1997 he passed his entrance A-level exams with distinction, and commenced his medical studies at Imperial College, London (MBBS), where he graduated in 2003 together with an intercalated BSc in Neuroscience in 2000. For his medical elective he was awarded a scholarship and went to Westmead Hospital, Sydney, Australia.

He started work at various prestigious hospitals in London such as St Thomas and St Mary’s. He taught anatomy under the auspices of the eminent Professor Harold Ellis at Guy’s Hospital, London, where he developed his passion for anatomy around the knee and teaching.

His junior surgical training was spent at Royal Stoke University Hospital and Liverpool deanery during which time he passed the junior surgical exams and became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS). He obtained a Masters in Orthopaedic Engineering (MSc) from Cardiff University. His thesis on postoperative analgesia received a distinction. 

His higher orthopaedic surgical training occurred at the Yorkshire deanery during which he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in trauma and orthopaedics (FRCS Tr&Orth) and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in trauma and orthopaedics.

5 Post CCT Fellowships

Dr Theodorides then undertook three years of subspecialty fellowship training in centres of excellence for knees with a special interest in sports injuries: London, Coventry, Bristol, Southampton and Leeds. He has a logbook of over 6000 operations and a special interest in sports knee injuries, ligament reconstructions, complex meniscal repair and meniscal transplants, chondral regeneration and transplantation, anterior knee pain, patella instability, trochleoplasties, knee realignment osteotomies and knee arthroplasty. He has always sought to learn from internationally leading figures in the field of knee surgery and will be passing on the wealth of knowledge and experience for the benefit of his patients.

During his fellowship at the Fortius Clinic, London, next to internationally renowned Mr Sam Church, Mr Jonathon Lavelle and Mr Andy Williams, he acquired experience in the management of sports knee injuries in elite athletes as well as anterior knee pain and patella instability. Fortius Clinic has the privilege of treating the top Premiership football and rugby players in the UK as well international VIPs.

During his time with Mr Spalding and Mr Thompson in Coventry he developed further experience in the full spectrum of complex knee pathologies, multiligament reconstructions, complex meniscal repair techniques and meniscal transplantation, complex realignment surgery and advanced cartilage regeneration and reimplantation procedures. 

In Bristol under the auspices of Mr Jonathon Eldridge he developed further his interest in patella instability, and patellofemoral arthroplasty with complex referrals from all over the UK and beyond. Mr Eldridge is one of the leading world figures in trochleoplasty. Working with Mr Andrew Porteous was a great opportunity to experience the management of complex knee arthroplasty as Bristol is a tertiary referral centre of excellence. 

He has obtained further skills and knowledge from several national and international visiting fellowships to world leaders in the field of sports knee injuries. He visited twice the International Knee and Joint Centre to visit Dr Charlie Brown at Abu Dhabi, UAE; Professor Christian Fink and Dr Christian Hoser in Innsbruck, Austria, with their extensive experience in skiing injuries and pioneering work on use of quadriceps tendon graft in ligament reconstructions; and Basingstoke Hospital, UK, to obtain tips on complex knee realignment osteotomies. 

Evidence Based Medicine

Dr Theodorides has published in numerous peer reviewed journals including novel ways of mobilising stem cells within the knee in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. His research has been presented in various international meetings. Whilst always keeping up to date with advances in knee surgery, he strongly believes in providing the highest quality in evidence based operative and conservative treatment to patients.
